Exam Qs = final challenge exam questions mapped to this module. All 15 final-exam questions map to the paid Modules 01–05 (3 questions per module). Durations are taken from the published programme curriculum.
Learning Components per Module
- Recorded video walkthrough
- Technical Reference (PDF)
- Applied Case Study (PDF)
- Built-in Module Knowledge Check
Every module follows the identical learning pattern: a recorded video walkthrough, a downloadable Technical Reference (PDF), an applied real-world Case Study (PDF), and a Built-in formative Module Knowledge Check delivered within the learning platform. Learning concludes with the final summative challenge exam ("The Challenge") and certificate issuance — certificate eligibility is determined by The Challenge alone.

Module Introductions & Practical Activity
Module Introductions (Modules 02–05)
Each module opens with a short professional introduction stating what it covers, why it matters, and what the learner works with — written using only concepts taught in that module.
Module 02 — Data Rationalization
- What it covers: Filtering operational data noise: ISA-18.2 alarm rationalization, hierarchical (root-cause) alarm suppression, and Management of Change (MOC) governance for setpoint and limit modifications.
- Why it matters: Alarm floods (e.g., 1,200+ random daily alarms) bury the true root cause, waste maintenance effort, and undermine SBC 601 compliance; rationalizing them converts wasted hours into measurable operational (OpEx) savings.
- What the learner works with: BMS alarm logs and setpoint/limit records, processed using the ISA-18.2 methodology taught in the module.
Module 03 — Digital Twins & Predictive Maintenance
- What it covers: Digital-twin condition auditing and predictive maintenance: the P-F interval ("golden window"), cross-analysis of electrical (starting current) and vibration (RMS / frequency) indicators, and unsupervised anomaly-detection baselines (Isolation Forest / Autoencoders).
- Why it matters: Waiting for mechanical failure forces emergency repairs and downtime; intervening inside the first half of the P-F window protects critical assets and substantially reduces emergency maintenance cost.
- What the learner works with: Live equipment telemetry — current, vibration RMS and dominant frequency — used to build a normal-behavior baseline and detect early deviations.
Module 04 — Precision PID & Energy Excellence
- What it covers: Precision control and energy excellence: PID loop tuning (using the derivative term to stop valve hunting), VFD skip-frequency programming around resonance bands, and PCM thermal-storage peak-shaving.
- Why it matters: Unstable control loops (hunting) cause thermal discomfort, mechanical wear, and wasted energy; precision tuning protects assets and reduces energy consumption, while peak-shaving can shrink required chiller capacity and CapEx.
- What the learner works with: BMS control-loop parameters (P/I/D terms, setpoints), VFD frequency settings, and thermal load profiles.
Module 05 — Financial Harvest & ROI Leadership
- What it covers: The financial harvest: calculating payback from total investment and verified annual savings, linking verified kWh savings to documented carbon reductions for ESG reporting, and building a defensible executive business case.
- Why it matters: Engineering results only become funded projects when translated into financial language: a payback period computed from verified (M&V) data is what convinces senior management.
- What the learner works with: Verified project data — investment, M&V-documented energy and maintenance savings, kWh savings, and the project-provided emission factor.
Module 05 Practical Activity — From Verified Savings to an Executive Business Case (Guided Analysis)
A guided data-analysis exercise performed on the existing Module 05 case-study dataset. It converts verified building-performance data into lifecycle financial and carbon outcomes at the level of analysis supported by the module materials. No parametric LCA or BIM modelling software is used, required, or claimed.
| Learner task | Using the verified post-completion data of a delivered efficiency project, calculate the payback period and the documented carbon impact, then assemble them into a defensible executive business case. |
| Input / data used |
|
| Steps performed |
|
| Expected output | A one-page executive business case: total verified annual savings, payback period in months, documented annual CO₂e reduction, and an investment recommendation grounded in verified (M&V) data. |
| Learning-outcome support | Directly applies all three Module 05 learning objectives: calculating the payback period from total investment and verified annual savings; linking verified kWh savings to carbon reductions for ESG documentation; and developing a financial business case targeting the programme payback threshold (under 30 months). |

Learning Outcomes & Ownership
Programme-Level Learning Outcome
Upon completion, the delegate can establish a digital baseline for HVAC systems, build a sovereign data backbone, rationalize alarms and operational data, apply predictive maintenance and digital-twin auditing, tune control systems precisely (PID), and translate savings into verified financial (ROI) and ESG outcomes.
Per-Module Learning Objectives
Module 01 — Digital Backbone & Digital Sovereignty
- Establish independent data access from vendor-locked equipment using protocol discovery (e.g., Modbus packet sniffing).
- Design an edge-computing telemetry architecture (MQTT, change-of-value mode) for sites with unreliable networks.
- Implement OT network segmentation and encrypted protocols (VLAN isolation, BACnet/SC, TLS 1.3).
Module 02 — Data Rationalization
- Apply ISA-18.2 alarm rationalization and quantify the resulting operational (OpEx) savings.
- Configure hierarchical alarm suppression so the root-cause alarm surfaces instead of consequential alarms.
- Enforce Management of Change (MOC) governance for any setpoint or limit modification.
Module 03 — Digital Twins & Predictive Maintenance
- Interpret the P-F interval and schedule proactive maintenance within the first half of the golden window.
- Diagnose bearing wear by cross-analyzing electrical (starting current) and vibration (RMS / frequency) indicators.
- Select unsupervised anomaly-detection models (Isolation Forest / Autoencoders) when no failure history exists.
Module 04 — Precision PID & Energy Excellence
- Tune PID control loops (especially the derivative term) to eliminate valve hunting around the setpoint.
- Program VFD skip frequencies to bypass mechanical resonance bands and protect assets.
- Evaluate PCM thermal-storage peak-shaving and its effect on required chiller capacity and CapEx.
Module 05 — Financial Harvest & ROI Leadership
- Calculate the payback period from total investment and verified annual savings.
- Link verified kWh savings to carbon reductions for ESG documentation.
- Develop a financial business case targeting the platform payback threshold (under 30 months).
